Increasing economic mobility

Walmart Foundation Retail Job Skills Campaign

Employment in the retail sector is often characterized as a job or series of jobs with little opportunity for career mobility either within the sector or between retail and other sectors. The Walmart Foundation’s Opportunity Initiative aims to increase the economic mobility of workers in retail and adjacent sectors by making it easier for frontline workers to move up more quickly to higher-level positions.

FHI 360 created and piloted the Start Here. Skill Up. (SHSU) social marketing campaign to increase the perceived value of retail work experience and associated skills among retail employees and employers. The campaign includes a fresh, engaging employee media campaign and a vibrant, easy-to-use employer intervention—the Skills Challenge—that translates research to practice, packaged in an innovative way.
